Elections
for the London Assembly are held on the same day as the elections
for London Mayor in May 2008. The Green Party currently holds two
seats on the 25-Member Assembly but are confident of making gains
under the proportional voting system. Greens gained 8.4% of the
Assembly vote in the last GLA elections in 2004 but the 2006 London
Borough Elections saw the Green vote rise to 13.5% across London
with the party making gains on a number of local councils. As well
as a ballot paper for Mayor every voter will also get two votes
for the London Assembly - one vote for their local constituency
member and one vote for their Londonwide members. Current Green
Assembly Members, Darren Johnson AM and Jenny Jones AM, are seeking
re-election as Londonwide members and are working hard to ensure
more Greens join them.
Sue
Luxton is the Green candidate for Greenwich & Lewisham in the 2008
London Assembly elections. An
active Green Party member for years, she is making an indelible
Green impact on local politics in Lewisham. She will bring fresh
energy and insight to the GLA and be able to influence a broader
range of issues affecting South East London's Lewisham residents.
Sue
Luxton was the Green candidate for Greenwich & Lewisham in the 2004
London Assembly elections, receiving one of the highest Green votes
in London. In May 2006, she was one of six Greens elected to Lewisham
Council and now chairs the Council's Sustainable Development Select
Committee.
"Since
being elected to Lewisham Council, I have worked to improve youth
provision in my ward, to tighten the ethical criteria for the council's
pension fund, and, together with the other Green councillors, in
getting a raft of green budget amendments accepted. I would relish
the opportunity to play a similar role on the London Assembly and
with Sian as our Mayoral Candidate we have a really strong Green
team for these elections."
Assembly
member and Green Councillor Darren Johnson says: "Sue has proved
herself to be an effective councillor who knows how to get things
done and knows how to make a difference. I am delighted she has
been selected for the Greenwich & Lewisham constituency."
Outside
of her work as a councillor, she teaches English at a language school
in Greenwich. She is also involved in Lewisham Oxfam Campaigns and
Greenwich & Lewisham Trade Justice Movement, when her council commitments
permit.
Notes:
Elections for Mayor of London and the 25 Member Assembly election
take place in May 2008. 14 of the Assembly Members are elected to
represent individual constituencies and the remaining 11 are elected
on a Londonwide basis to ensure proportional representation. Greens
currently hold two of the 25 Assembly seats.
