"My
grandmother and father were both born in Lee and
I was raised there from 1961 then living in Brockley and Ladywell
since 1982.
Whilst a science teacher in Catford in 1985 I volunteered for the
Borough's wildlife conservation groups and grew to know Lewisham
as a whole, especially its Sites of Nature Conservation Interest.
I am currently Training and Education Officer for a new local social
enterprise. I was a board member for the London Wildlife Trust and
co-founded the London Environmental Education Forum.
I
have been involved in the Lewisham Green Party since 2000
as I have become aware of the complex issues that affect our environment
and how we as individuals have a significant influence for bad and
good. I have expanded my volunteering in Lewisham (see Extra curricula).
In
these roles I have promoted biodiversity, sustainability and recycling
from installing Brownfield Roofs to advocating compartmented sweepers'
bins. I have also promoted a healthier, cleaner and safer environment
for all people here having published my '2020 Vision' (Mercury 31/1/2001),
researched the Lewisham Big Green Map and contributed to the design
of the UHL Ravensbourne wing.
I
believe that a greener lifestyle can be achieved in Lewisham
by education, edification and enlightenment and is essential to
steer us out of the mess we have helped create; teaching and employing
young people in the process and promoting equality and inclusion
through reparation to the people and environment that we have effected.
Any sacrifices made would be offset by benefits to us and our communities
improving our quality of life and for the youngsters of the future.
I see the Greens as having the only policies to achieve this, acting
locally to have a local and global effect."
